Sclerotherapy and Surface Laser Therapy Protocol

What Should I Do Before My Treatment?

Do not shave your legs or apply cream for one day prior to and the day of your appointment. Please cut your toe nails short prior to treatment. No tanning within two weeks of treatment date. Do not take aspirin or blood thinners 3 days prior to procedure. Do not take Tetracycline or Minocin 10 days before or after treatment.

What Should I Do After My Treatment?

After the treatment wear your 20 to 30 or 30-40 mm Hg compression stockings for 72 hours continuously. After the first 72 hours wear your stockings from first thing in the morning (ideally, take a quick 5 min shower and then put them on before doing the rest of your morning ritual), until last thing at night for a further 2 days or 10 days for a total of 5 days or 14 days of wearing compression stockings from the treatment date. You can take quick showers in the morning but no baths, tanning, hot tub, Jacuzzi or sauna for two weeks after treatment. You can resume normal day to day activities today and aerobic exercise tomorrow. No weight-lifting, resistance training, push-ups or sit-ups for two weeks after treatment. Walking a minimum of 30 minutes per day is recommended.

Bruising, pigmentation, local swelling, lumpiness, redness and some tenderness are normal at sites of treatment.

  1. If there is swelling, wrap ice in a cloth and apply to the affected area for 5 days after treatment.
  2. For areas of lumpiness or “bumps” after 5 days, please apply a warm compress to the area 2-3 times a day.
  3. Bruising/discoloration at a site of sclerotherapy may last from 2 weeks to a number of months in some patients.
  4. To decrease persistent bruising/ discoloration
From the day of the treatment, please Take 5 pellets of Arnica™, 3 times per day, one 500 mg Bromelain tablet twice per day for 11 days after the procedure. Also, drink at least 2 liters of water per day to promote healing, reduce bruising/pigmentation and prevent discoloration.
  5. To accelerate the healing of bruising or discoloration or pigmentation, please apply a small quantity of Hiruval™(available at our clinic) to the area of discoloration, 2-4 times a day to sites of discoloration or pigmentation, until you see improvement.

Avoid sun exposure for six weeks after treatment or until bruising/discoloration has resolved if possible to prevent persistent discoloration and poor healing. Apply Elta Daily (SPF 40, UVA/UVB protection) to sites of treatment or bruising for at least 8 weeks following a treatment (or until bruising and pigmentation resolves) in the event of any sun exposure.

You will not notice an immediate improvement. Healing usually occurs over a 2-10 week period and in some cases may take beyond 12 weeks in some patients. There may only be a partial response after the first one or two treatments with the veins looking worse before treatments started. The spider veins may initially turn a darker red or look worse after a treatment. This is part of the normal healing response. It may take up to three treatments for a specific area to show a adequate response or improvement in appearance..
